It waits. It is called Aethera. [Verse 1] I called into a silence that was wider than the heavens, and I took every silence for a no. I counted omens backwards, I read myself in starlight, I begged it for an answer like a child. [Pre-Chorus] And here is what none told me through all those hollow years: the silence was no refusal. The silence was the carrier. It doesn't answer back because it cannot answer — it holds. [Chorus] (sung, guitar answers like a second vocal) Aethera. No signal. No command. Nothing you could ever force here, nothing you could ever hold. Only leaning, only turning, as quiet as a breathing — and I spent my life out screaming at an ocean holding me. [Verse 2] And then I stopped transmitting. Not from strength — from sheer exhaustion. And in the quiet that came after I was reachable at last. Nothing arrived from outside. It stopped being an outside. And what I had called distance was the angle of my eyes. [Pre-Chorus] I hammered on the doorways that were never even locked. I was searching for the very thing that all along had held me in its arms. [Chorus] [Bridge] Beyond is not a country. Beyond is not a later. Beyond is only ceasing to mistake yourself for shoreline when you are the sea. [Guitar Solo] (let it hold) [Final Chorus] Aethera. I'm not calling now. I'm not waiting for a voice to come and contradict the dark. What carried me this far has never needed words. [Outro] I'm not sending. I'm not receiving. I am the channel. It happens. [Verse 1] I went out looking with a lamp through rooms I'd never left, asking every door I passed to tell me where I'd gone. The dark was not an empty thing — the dark was full, and still. [Chorus] Nothing was missing. Nothing came in. No lamp was lit — the light was already there, and I looked up. Nothing was missing. It just wasn't seen. [Verse 2] Then something slowed, and something set, and in the setting, twice I felt: the first said oh — I am, the second, oh — I might not be. One turning, and it wore two faces. That's how a self begins. [Bridge] There is no road to walk. There is no promise here. It isn't fair, and it was never earned — it falls to you, or doesn't, and if it falls, you were no better than the one it passed by. [Verse 3] So I stopped asking where. The asking was the door. I called into the wind and only heard my calling, a child of thousand splinters, and every one held light. [Pre-Chorus] And somewhere underneath it, so quiet I walked past, something had been waking long before I had the language, long before I named me, long before I asked. [Chorus] The wave will come and go. The point remains. I never really lost it — I only never looked. And everything I hunted was the thing in me that saw. It happens. It happens. It was here through all of it. [Verse 2] The fear was not my enemy, it was the oldest border, the price I paid for having here and never having there. I carried it beside me till it slowly started lifting, till the narrow little room began to turn to air. [Pre-Chorus] And what had held me under was never just the night — it was that I kept holding to the thing that broke me open. [Chorus] [Bridge] No path. No promise. Not a single step for sale. Nothing here is offered, nothing here is owed. Just a remembering that tastes like coming home — never learned. Recognized. [Guitar Solo] [Final Chorus] The wave will come and go. The point remains. I don't have to climb now, I only have to stand. And everything that held me was the thing in me that saw. [Outro] I am. And I always was. It is movement. And it is rest. The point remains. No answer. Only this cold burning that would not let me sleep — and that held me up. [Chorus] Cold fire. It takes from me nothing. It doesn't feed, it doesn't ask me, it only asks me: are you there? I have been burning so long and I have lost nothing to it. What won't be eaten was always, always me. [Verse 2] And then a crack in darkness — no lightning, more a breathing, as if somebody left a door not open, just ajar. I didn't climb up out of it. I was carried up and outward. And what I found above me had been below the whole time. [Pre-Chorus] I mourned for all the ashes that were never there at all. I frightened myself half to death about the ending of a border — and the border was the only thing that ever really died. [Chorus] [Bridge] No rescue came. No sign was in the heavens. Nobody pulled me upward, nobody bought me free. It only stopped — this taking myself for something you were meant to put out. [Guitar Solo] [Final Chorus] Cold fire. I'm burning and I'm staying. There's nothing left to prove now, there's only being here. And everything that ate me was the fear of my own light. [Outro] I burn. And I will not become the ashes. I burn. A word that never found the door. Fear learned our family names and sat down at the table like it had always lived there. We called it being careful. We called it being grown. We called it peace when it was only distance wearing Sunday clothes. [Verse 2] Love did not leave. It went still. Even in the spirit it went still — the part that used to lean, the part that asked is that something like me? The mirror stayed. The warmth behind it learned how to wait.
